A Nautical Theme

As mentioned, the typography class decided to go with a nautical theme related to the ontology of the word "scrimshaw." Here are a few inspirations/design elements put together by Katlin Bailey. Feel free to leave comments.

The nautical theme is different. I like it, but at the same time I do not feel that the Scrimshaw/art project(not sure what to call it) should be limited to one style. I think that it can be changed up and varied throughout the whole of the magazine. As each entry will consist of a different theme, so should the basic look of the magazine.

  2. Actually the nautical theme is not new as it was used both in 2007 and in 2008; we arrived at the idea by looking at the older issues of the Scrimshaw, as well as looking up the definition of the word. The theme of the magazine is not nautically inspired; it is an arts and literary journal. The nautically themed elements are used merely to create some sense of consistency across the periodical; consistency being instrumental for any good piece of design. However, we are very receptive to discussing the issue at the meeting on Wednesday.

  3. Would it be difficult to incorporate an image or two of pieces of scrimshaw as background?

  4. I love the nautical theme. It's not going to be anything like "Little Mermaid" or something--it's Victorian nautical!

I'm actually trying to design a cover with a piece of scrimshaw on it, but we'll see how that goes. (: It's proving challenging, but that could just be me, heh.
